About me

My name is Caroline Halliday. I have always loved arts and crafts, and take great delight in creating beautiful things. Over the years I have painted, felted, made jewellery, created cards and invitations, quilted, knitted, crocheted and made clothes, to name but a few things!

My background is unusual. I have a first class degree and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, and worked for many years in aero engine design for Rolls-Royce. The precision and skills needed for my engineering career have crossed over directly into any art or craft I have tried. I pride myself in precision, intricacy, and meticulous attention to every detail.

The first ‘proper’ cake I made was in 2012, for my Husband’s 40th birthday. It was a recreation of a wonderful Lindy Smith sheep, and I surprised myself at how accurately I managed to reproduce the design. And this is where it all began.

From then, I spent years making numerous cakes for friends and family, spending many many hours learning the craft. I worked well into the wee small hours of the night, sometimes still being up to see the dawn. One of the cakes I made was never cut, and remains, years later, (in pristine condition!) in a glass case on display for all to see.
